Santo Domingo, September 5th, 2010. The United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) now part of United Nations Women (UN-Women), is hosting on September 5th and 6th, 2010, an Experts Group Meeting in which the attendees will discuss the cooperation and joint promotion necessary to attain the Millennium Development Goals from a gender perspective, and analyze the achievements and the challenges in increasing women’s participation on politics and global expansion.
Just 5 years away from the Millennium Development Goals deadline, and on the eve of the next UN Summit on September 22nd in New York, the UN-INSTRAW (now part of UN-WOMEN) will host an Experts Group Meeting on their headquarters in Santo Domingo, with the purpose of reviewing the progress made towards the reaching of the ODM’s, as well as targeting coordinated actions to accelerate their achievement.
Given that Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Goals are among the least achieved of the Millennium Goals, this Experts Group Meeting being held at the UN-INSTRAW (now part of UN Women) will provide a great opportunity for sharing knowledge, reinforcing information exchange and strengthening the capacity to effectively integrate research results into policy dialogue, trough the presentation of practical experiences that can be reproduced and adapted to different environments, towards the consecution of the Millennium Development Goals from a gender perspective.
The event, organized by UN-INSTRAW (now part of UN-WOMEN), will confer the areas of Migration and Global Care Chains, Implementation of Women – Peace and Security Resolutions, Policies, National Action Plans and Programs. Also, it will address the issues of Women’s Political Leadership as part of a democratic governance and development, Advocacy for accountability on Financing Gender and Aid Effectiveness, among other subjects.
Besides the UN-INSTRAW (now part of UN-WOMEN)Staff, the meeting will be attended by numerous personalities, such as: Dzodzi Tsikata (PhD), Head of the Centre for Gender Studies and Advocacy (CEGENSA) Senior Research Fellow at ISSER, University of Ghana; Maureen Clarke, Chief Executive of the Women National Institute in Costa Rica; Indira Hirway, India Feminist Economist, specialized in Time Management; Ndeye Sow, representing International Alert; and Elizabeth Salguero, leading the Works on Costing of the National Development Plan in Bolivia.
Also attending, N’Dri T. Assié-Lumumba, Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies and Research Center at Cornell University; and Meagan Bovell, International Consultant and former UNIFEM Program Manager.
The Dominican Republic’s Women Ministry will be represented by: Carmen Perez, Inter-agencies Coordination Director; María Ramos, Equality Policies Director; and Ana Arabelis Mejía, Migratory Policies Technician.
