Despite the clear mandate of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security to increase the representation of women at all decision-making levels, they have been all but completely excluded from the ongoing peace- and State-building processes in Somalia. The participation of both women in Somalia and Somali women from the Diaspora is crucial to the establishment of sustainable and inclusive peace and democratic governance in this war-torn and famine-affected country.

 The UN-INSTRAW/DCAF/ODIHR tool on Police Reform and Gender has been translated into Dari by the Law and Order Trust Fund for Afghanistan of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) country office in Afghanistan. The translated version serves the Afghan community, strengthening the capacity of the police force to understand and address the security needs of men, women, boys and girls from a perspective of gender equality and inclusive security.

UN-INSTRAW was honoured to receive the visit of María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, First Vice-President of the Government of Spain during a meeting held on 7 August 2008 at the Institute’s international headquarters in Santo Domingo. Carolina Taborga, Officer-in-Charge of UN-INSTRAW presented the results of the Institute’s revitalization and strengthening programme in it’s strategic areas of research, training and knowledge Management, as well as the main achievements of its projects in various regions of the world.
