Local governments need to work harder for women

UN-INSTRAW, Progressio, Volens, the Dominican National Council for State Reform (CONARE), the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI) and the Friederich Ebert Stiftung (FES), organized a two-day Seminar on Gender Equality and Local Development, November 21st to 22nd 2007 in Santo Domingo, D.R.
 
Secretary-General spearheads campaign for the elimination of violence against women

In his Statement for November 25th, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced the launch of a multi-year campaign for the elimination of violence against women. The campaign, which would run through 2015, aims to focus on three key areas: global advocacy; United Nations leadership by example; and strengthened partnerships at the national and regional levels.

UN-INSTRAW hosted the first Virtual Forum “Women and the Debating Community”

From 8 to 31 October 2007, UN-INSTRAW hosted the Virtual Forum “Women and the Debating Community” within the framework of its project “Strengthening Governance with a Gender Perspective and the Political Participation of Women at the Local Level,” which is financed by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI). The project aims to analyze governance processes, the obstacles encountered by women exercising political power and the strategies used to overcome them.

The 2007 Survey on Remittances from a Gender Perspective, published by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW), shows the impact of migratory experiences in the case of Guatemalan migrants and recipients of remittances, through 3,000 household interviews.
