“The GENDER DIMENSIONS OF REMITTANCES:
Their flows, uses and development impacts.
From Southafrica to Mozambique, Botswana, Malawi, Lesotho and Swazilandia ”

Objectives

  • To evaluate the impact of the remittances sent by the migrants from South Africa to his communities of origin in concrete aspects as food safety of the households that receive remittances and community development, from a gender perspective.
  • To support activities of strengthening of capacities promoted by associations of migrants, where they exist, in order to improve the life conditions of men and women migrants in South Africa.
  • To aware the migrants that reside in South Africa about the potential for the rural development of his communities of origin and of the available alternatives for the mailing of remittances;
  • To promote the strengthening of capacities of key agents – financial institutions, agencies of United Nations, governmental organisms, agencies of international cooperation, associations of migrants, local NGOs and academic centers - in order to integrate the gender perspective in the programs, projects and other initiatives destined to link remittances and rural development, with the development of guides, tools and other materials.

Considering the absence of systematized information on the migratory flows to South Africa and the mailing of remittances to five concerned countries, due to the absence of previous investigations, the project has been divided in two phases. At present the first phase that is executing is centered on the compilation of information proceeding from secondary sources and on the achievement of several focal groups with key actors. The information produced in this first phase will allow realizing the phase corresponding to the production of new information with major guarantees.

Activities of the first phase:

At the end of the first phase we will have the required information to define the principal areas that the investigation will cover and the criteria for the selection of communities and thematic areas that will have to be covered for the field work.

  • Desk review of the existing information on migration and remittances in South Africa and in the principal countries of origin of the migrants (Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and Swazilandia).
  • Mapping of the principal actors and agents at national and transnational level.
  • Organization of groups of discussion with key actors at national level (representatives of the government, financial entities, affiliations of migrants, etc.) and compilation of the results in a report of synthesis.
  • Organization of an interagency meeting with key agents.
  • Review of the project proposal on the base of the results of the phase of collection of information, and identification of potential donors.
