Gender, Migration and Development Virtual Discussions PDF Print E-mail
In the fall of 2008, UN-INSTRAW hosted two virtual discussions about Gender, Remittances, Migration and Development. Experts from around the world came together online to discuss international migration and development from a gender perspective. The first discussion "Towards a Participatory Research Framework" aimed to enrich UN-INSTRAW's research framework while the second, "Creating Gender Sensitive Migration Policy" aimed to identify poilcy priorities for migration policy.

International migration for economic necessity is a phenomenon affecting more and more people, households and communities worldwide. Accompanying this increase in migration is an increase in remittances, which have become the largest source of foreign exchange for many poor countries. Remittances are gaining the attention of governments, financial institutions and development institutions who are interested in their potential for poverty reduction and local development.

Gender affects every aspect of migration. Women are increasingly involved in the sending, receiving and managing of remittances and are thus critical players in the connection between migration and development. Yet despite women’s important and growing role, very few studies have analysed the relationship between gender, migration, remittances and development. This is particularly disconcerting because it is recognized that integrating a gender perspective into international development policies and programmes increases their effectiveness and sustainability.

The first discussion "Towards A Participatory Research Framework" was held from September 8 - October 3, 2008. It was attended by more than 90 academics, researchers, and experts from over 20 countries. This virtual discussion aimed to encourage debate around the importance of women's participation in migratory flows and their contribution to development in order enrich UN-INSTRAW's research and public policy advocacy with new perspectives, ideas and priorities. It was based on UN-INSTRAW's Working Papers Migration and Development, Remittances and Feminization of Migration.
