 Carmen Moreno, Director of UN-INSTRAW, participated in the 52nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) being held from 25 February to 7 March 2008 at United Nations Headquarters. In her statement, and in line with the priority theme of the CSW session, Moreno emphasized that investment in the empowerment of women is a prerequisite to achieving the Millennium Development Goals.

UN-INSTRAW participated at First International Forum on Women and Local Politics on 26 February 2008 in Córdoba, Spain. The aim of the Forum was to analyze and commonly agree upon local initiatives to confront the challenges of the processes resulting from a global and interconnected world.

UN-INSTRAW’s Executive Board will celebrate its Fifth Session at UN Headquarters on 21-22 February 2008. At this session, the Executive Board will discuss the Institute’s last activities, among other issues related to its work plan for the forthcoming months.

The Director of UN-INSTRAW, Ms Carmen Moreno, attended the First Forum of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations that gathered over 300 representatives of international regional organizations, donor agencies, diplomats, media leaders, academia, grassroots and civil society.

UN-INSTRAW participated in the Workshop organized by the Swiss Campaign to Ban Landmines that was held on 15 January 2008 in Geneva, Switzerland. The objective of the workshop was to obtain inputs from the participants for the preparation of a training kit on gender and mine action.

 The United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) is participating actively in the provision of emergency response of Tropical Storm Noel in the Dominican Republic. The storm left the country in a state of national emergency where response and recovery efforts continue. According to the latest reports from the National Emergency Committee (CNE), 87 people have been killed, 48 are still unaccounted for and approximately 3,400 have been rescued from dangerous situations. Some 16,700 houses have been completely or partially destroyed and 26 out of 32 provinces (80 % of the country) have been seriously affected.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement for 25 November 2007, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, condemning violence against women and announcing a system-wide multi-year campaign through 2015. The campaign will focus on three key areas: global advocacy; United Nations leadership by example; and strengthened partnerships at the national and regional levels to support the work of Governments, civil society, the private sector and others.

From November 19th to 21st 2007, UN-INSTRAW participated in the High-Level Dialogue on the National-Level Implementation of Resolution 1325 (2000) in Latin America and the Caribbean. This event was organized by the Office of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women (OSAGI) and the Women and Development Unit of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) at the UN regional commission headquarters in Santiago de Chile.

UN-INSTRAW participated in the Second International Money Transmitters Convention (IMTC) from November 15th to 16th 2007 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Convention was organized by the National Money Transmitters Association (NMTA) in cooperation with the Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA).

From 8 to 31 October 2007, UN-INSTRAW hosted the Virtual Forum “Women and the Debating Community” within the framework of its project “Strengthening Governance with a Gender Perspective and the Political Participation of Women at the Local Level,” which is financed by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation (AECI). The project aims to analyze governance processes, the obstacles encountered by women exercising political power and the strategies used to overcome them.

UN-INSTRAW extends its congratulations to Argentina’s first elected female head of state, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. On Sunday October 28th, Fernández won the election with nearly 45% of the vote, outpacing her chief rivals Elisa Carrió of the Civic Coalition (who secured 23% of the vote) and Roberto Lavagna, former Economy Minister (17%). Eleven other candidates split the remaining 15%. The first lady will take over the leadership of Argentina on December 10th.
