Second International Money Transmitters Convention (IMTC) PDF Print E-mail
UN-INSTRAW participated in the Second International Money Transmitters Convention (IMTC) from November 15th to 16th 2007 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Convention was organized by the National Money Transmitters Association (NMTA) in cooperation with the Florida International Bankers Association (FIBA).
Not only transmitters and employees, but also agents, bankers, credit unions, micro-finance institutions, professional service providers, government officials and UN Institutions attended this event. The main object of the IMTC was to establish a dialogue among these different actors involved in international money transmissions.

In her presentation to the Convention, UN-INSTRAW Director Carmen Moreno stressed the importance of developing appropriate and accessible financial services for women in order to maximize the development impact of remittances and help women recipients strengthen their savings and investment capacities.

With 21 case studies in the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, South-East Asia and Africa, UN-INSTRAW`s pioneering research on the gender dimensions of remittances for development has highlighted the fact that many women face additional barriers to accessing financial products and services, which limits their ability to invest remittances in income-generating activities.
