25 April 2008
Within the framework of the project “Gender and remittances: Strengthening the capacities of Colombian women migrants as development agents from a human rights perspective,” UN-INSTRAW provides technical assistance to Sisma Mujer, an organization that monitors the situation of women’s human rights in Colombia.
The project specifically aims at designing a conceptual and methodological tool to analyze the experiences of Colombian women in Spain who remit their earnings home, as well as the recipients in Colombia.
The objective of this analysis is to generate recommendation for improving the impact of remittances on the communities that receive them and fostering better labour and living conditions for the women who send them.
As part of this assessment, UN-INSTRAW participated in a meeting held 31 March to 1 April 2008 in Madrid (Spain) to identify the central research topics. This preliminary meeting was attended by Colombian women migrants, a group of experts on the issues of migration and remittances and the UN-INSTRAW project team. On 6 May 2008 UN-INSTRAW will participate in a second meeting in Bogota (Colombia) to establish the future activities of the project.
This project is part of the UN-INSTRAW Gender, Migration and Development Programme. One of the main objectives of this Programme is to strengthen the capacity of women migrants’ associations, enabling them to play a more important role in decision-making on migration-related issues.
The Project is financed by the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation in Development (AECID).
