The 3rd Global Congress of Women in Politics: Focus on Gender, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction will be held from 19-22 October 2008 in Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines. This is the first international conference on the topic of gender and climate change.

UNIFEM launched its biennial global report, Progress of the World’s Women 2008/2009 “Who Answers to Women? Gender and Accountability,” on September 18th at the UN Secretariat in New York. The publishing of the new report marks the halfway point for achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015.

On August 1, 2008, Ms. Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, a Nigerian national, assumed her post as the Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons with an emphasis on women and children. She is taking over a post previously held by Ms. Sigma Huda of Bangladesh.

The European Women’s Lobby 50/50 Campaign “No Modern European Democracy without Gender Equality” was launched on September 16, 2008 and will run until June 2009. The European wide campaign aims to increase the presence of women at the highest level of European politics and to encourage women and voters in general to cast their votes in the next European elections.
