The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women will hold its 41st session from 30 June to 18 July 2008. This year’s committee, held in New York, will examine the country reports from Finland, Iceland, Lithuania, Nigeria, Slovakia, United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, United Republic of Tanzania, Yemen.


The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), adopted in 1979 by the UN General Assembly, is an international bill of rights for women. It defines what constitutes discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination. Although member states of CEDAW have made advances in achieving gender equality through legislation, national gender equality policies, strategies and action plans, according to Rachel Mayanja Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, “a large gap remains between Member States’ commitments to women and reality at the country level.”
