UNESCO’s global operation to promote gender equality in the media was launched for the eighth consecutive year on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2008. Women’s Untold Stories has been chosen as the theme for Women Make the News 2008, in order to raise media managers’ awareness of female journalists’ and editors’ professional abilities with the objective of improving their career development opportunities in the newsroom and establishing gender equality.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) has released the report entitled “30 Years of Democracy: Riding the Wave? Women’s Political Participation in Latin America. The report draws data from 18 countries in the Latin American region, exams the progress made in women’s participation in politics, and gives statistics on women’s political representation in areas which were before exclusive to men.

Ten United Nations agencies issued a joint statement on 27 February 2008 joining hands to help eliminate female genital mutilation within a generation and “stressing the need for strong leadership and greater resources to protect the health and lives of millions of women and girls”.

The Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation and The Advocates for Human Rights, with the support of the Oak Foundation, the Open Society Institute’s Human Rights and Governance Program, and the Bulgarian Fund for Women, sponsored a Regional Conference on Legal Reform on Domestic Violence on 12-14 February 2008 in Sofia, Bulgaria that was attended by participants from 29 countries.
