For cultural and biological reasons, women are twice as likely as men to experience depression. The unequal power and status of women can contribute to depression. Women earn less than men and have a lower socioeconomic status, which means lack of control and uncertainty about the future, which can cause depression.
A heavy workload can also contribute to depression. Single mothers have one of the highest poverty rates in the United States and often need to work multiple jobs to make ends meet. Women are more likely than men to shoulder the burden of both work and domestic responsibilities and women are usually caregivers to older generations, which increases their workload even further. Women experience more sexual and physical abuse, which are also known to increase the risk of depression.
