UN-INSTRAW present a new video, commemorating the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women 2009.
Latin America and the Caribbean is a dangerous place for women.
More than 50 percent of women in the region have been attacked. In the
Dominican Republic, for example, 1.453 women were murdered between 2000
and 2008. Under the International Day for the Elimination of Violence
against Women, UN-INSTRAW is launching a new safety video on Latin and
Caribbean women.
On November 25, declared International Day for
the Elimination of Violence Against Women, commemorates and honors the
memory of the Mirabal sisters, three political activists in the
Dominican Republic who were killed in the same day in November of 1961
. As part of the annual campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender
Violence, the campaign of the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Ban
Ki-moon and with the support of the regional office of the
International Fund for Women, UNIFEM Mexico and Women and Health
Collective in the Dominican Republic, the International Research and
Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) has
prepared this video.
