The UN-INSTRAW Executive Board held its Sixth session in New York on 23 April to consider a report on the implementation of the Institute’s work and a proposal for institutional strengthening.
The report on the implementation of the Institute’s work during the period October 2008 – March 2009 contains information on the activities undertaken by UN-INSTRAW, in accordance with its work plans for 2008 and 2009, including progress made in the Institute’s three thematic areas: Gender, Migration and Development; Governance and Women’s Political Participation; Gender, peace and security; as well as activities related to capacity-building and institutional development.
The UN-INSTRAW proposal for institutional strengthening is based on the results of an assessment consultancy that was conducted by the Office of the Under Secretary-General for Management, Management Support Services in November 2008 at the request of the Executive Board. The purpose of this consultancy was to assess the progress made in the implementation of the 2008 Action Plan, which was developed as a result of a management consultancy conducted in January 2008, and to support the formulation of specific strategies for strengthening the Institute’s position and operations.
The Executive Board is composed of ten Member States, elected by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations for a three-year term. The Board meets at least once a year at the Headquarters of the United Nations in New York in order to formulate principles, policies and guidelines, consider and approve the work programme and budget, make recommendations on the operations, and to consider methods for enhancing the financial resources. The Board reports periodically to ECOSOC, and when appropriate, to the General Assembly
