Liberia breaks new ground for women, peace and security
For the first time in a post-conflict country, national governmental institutions, the United Nations, and civil society organizations have worked together to build an inclusive policy document for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325. On International Women’s Day 2009, the Government of the Republic of Liberia, headed by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, launches its national action plan on women, peace and security.

Virtual dialogue on gender training methodologies
Training and capacity-building processes are part of development work everywhere. However, gender training has not always delivered the expected results. This might be related both to the way gender is conceptualized in gender training and also to the methodologies used. The second Virtual Dialogue of the UN-INSTRAW Gender Training Community of Practice has as its overall theme the Methodologies used in Gender Training and Capacity-Building.

First case of feminicide before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights
In January 2009 the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights decided to file a claim against the Government of Mexico at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, in reference to eight cases of feminicide in Ciudad Juárez.

The International Policy Centre for Inclusive Growth (IPC-IG) is launching an online catalogue of Poverty Networks. This is a web-based platform aimed to share development-related information, facilitate access to development knowledge across the network in 189 countries and help foster dialogue between researchers, policy-makers, civil society and multilateral organizations.

Bangladesh Parliament to double seats for women
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh announced that the number of seats reserved for women in the Bangladeshi Parliament would be raised from 45 to 100 out of the 300 seats in the unicameral legislature.

UNESCO launches ´Women Make the News´ campaign 2009 and online forum
The theme for the 2009 UNESCO-campaign - within the Women Make the News initiative - is gender equality policies in media organizations. The campaign aims to emphasize the significance of developing and introducing policies in media organizations to prevent all forms of discrimination based on gender.

New UN database on violence against women
On 5 March 2009, the new database on violence against women was launched by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. The database offers a comprehensive and systematic way to search for data on gender-based violence.
