Multilateral institutions and members of academia will hold a meeting on migration with a special focus on women’s migration from the Caribbean. The event is entitled “Women and Migration: a view from the Caribbean,” and will be held on 22 April in Santo Domingo.

[Press Release, Santo Domingo, 21 April 2009] In order to commemorate women’s month, which was celebrated around the world during the month of March, FLACSO, IOM and UN-INSTRAW collaborated to organize an activity on migrant women that will highlight research findings on themes related to migration, remittances, development and transnationalism, with special emphasis on the matter of migrant women from the Caribbean.

The meeting will gather academic experts from different countries who are interested in the issue of the migration of Caribbean women.  The experts will include Diana López, Associate Expert of UN-INSTRAW, who will present a general overview on migrant women, the characteristics of the inter-Caribbean and international migratory flows; and María Paredes, researcher and activist who has worked extensively on the theme of Dominican women in Spain. Other presenters will include Tahira Vargas, a Dominican anthropologist who has carried out research on Dominican migrant women living in Switzerland and on migration and remittances with a gender perspective between the Dominican Republic and the United States; and Bridget Wooding, researcher at FLACSO and Coordinator of the Caribbean Migrants’ Observatory, who will examine the theme of insular migration.

This meeting aims at linking academic debates on migration and development with empirical evidence of research and the personal experiences of the researchers.  It also seeks to raise the participants’ awareness of the important role of the migrant woman in current migration processes and in the shaping of transnational networks, as well as reflect on the transformation of labour markets for women.
