More than 142,000 Algerians have utilized microloans from the National
Agency for the Management of Micro-Credit (ANGEM) over the past four
years.
Mr. Djamel Ould Abess, Minister of National Solidarity, noted that 52 percent of beneficiaries of micro-credits between 2005 and 2009 were women.
Microloans are a means to promoting equality between men and women by strengthening the economic empowerment of women. According to several studies, this is often a first step toward political empowerment.
