The Project ‘Strengthening Governance from a Gender Perspective and Women's Political Participation at the Local Level in Latin America’ concentrates on the Andean and Central American Regions. The regional focus allows a more complete vision of the historical and sociopolitical processes in relation to the political participation of women in Latin America. In addition, helping to identify similarities and differences in the panorama of political involvement helps us understand a greater number of experiences, activate regional networks and implement joint actions.

The Project focuses on 10 countries: Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Honduras, and Panama. Mexico joins the project through an agreement between UN-INSTRAW and the National Women’s Institute (INMUJERES). Venezuela was included in the first phase of the study in which a stakeholder map, or registry of organizations and institutions, was developed for each country.
