The Dominican Republic House of Representatives granted an official recognition to Chile’s former President, Michelle Bachelet for representing solidarity, democracy and social justice in a ceremony held at the National Assembly Hall of Congress.

The Under Secretary-General of UN Women was received in the Office of the President of the House orf Representatives, where she signed the Distinguished Visitor’s book during a ceremony attended by the Representative and President of the Foreign Relations Commission, Minou Tavares Mirabal and Magda Rodríguez, President of the Gender Equality Commission.
Chile’s former President acknowledged the honour conferred to her by the House of Representatives, pointing out the challenges and advances that as a society and Congress should be undertaken to meet the Millennium Development Goals.
Bachelet stated that 50 years after the assassination of the Mirabal Sisters, thousands of women are inspired to struggle for better living conditions and continued saying, “many conquests remain to be accomplished by women; we need more councilwomen, legislators and presidents for our countries”.
She referred to the Millennium Development Goals as a challenge to be met by Latin American countries before the year 2015, amongst which are to eradicate hunger, achieve basic education for all, women’s autonomy, reduce the number of people affected by HIV/AIDS, and erradicate maternal mortality, amongst other issues.
The Dominican Republic Youth Ministry also gave recognition to Chile’s former President and Executive Director of UN Women during this same activity for her long and successful professional and political career which is based on a profound and solid human upbringing.
The recognition seeks to reward the endeavours of this prominent Chilean in favour of women’s struggle in attaining equality and making it permanent, as well as to highlight the role and pluralism of her government that was an example of transparency, solidarity, democracy and social justice.
Amongst the personalities that have received such a recognition by the Youth Ministry are former presidents Ricardo Lago from Chile and Rodrigo Borjas of Ecuador; José Miguel Insulza, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), and other personalities from the region.
The Youth Ministry of the Dominican Republic is an entity created to foster democratic values and is integrated by young people from all over the country.
Bachelet also received from the House of Representatives a unanimous recognition as a result of a resolution proposed by the Representative of the National Disctrict, Víctor Bisonó, whereby it acknowledges her “dedication, trust, contribution to social, cultural, political and economic development of her country”. Ms Bachelet was also named “Outstanding Woman of Latin America”. |
