Description:
Tú Mujer organized the third annual conference on Remittances and Development in the Dominican Republic with a special emphasis on the current global financial crisis. This meeting brought together civil society representatives, the government, experts on the topic and international organizations to assess and discuss the local impact of the global crisis on the Dominican Republic.

The presentation made by UN-INSTRAW is titled: "Mujeres migrantes en el nuevo orden mundial: Cómo las mujeres se ven especialmente afectadas por la crisis?".

Description:
The International Conference on Gender, Migration and Development: Seizing Opportunities, Upholding Rights (September 25-26, Manila)  examined women’s participation in migratory flows and their crucial contribution to development through the sending, receipt and management of remittances. The conference aimed to identify paths to enhance the positive aspects of migration and mitigate the negative effects, as well as promote greater gender equality in both sending and receiving countries.

With this event FLACSO Ecuador celebrates 10 years of work about feminism and gender studies. "Los últimos diez años han traído cambios acelerados en el Ecuador y la región en muchas direcciones, sin que podamos aprehender a ciencia cierta sus significados para las relaciones de género. El devenir de los cuerpos y las fronteras en la globalización condensa las paradojas de los cambios experimentados en la vida de hombres y mujeres, en la conformación de sus subjetividades y en las relaciones y representaciones del género y la sexualidad. Date: 11.02.2008 Event:Jornada: “El dinero que llega de fuera, las remesas: un camino hacia la democracia financiera”, Casa de América, Madrid, España
Description:
The concept of "Financial Democratization" adopted by Donald Terry, Director of FOMIN, states that if senders and receivers of remittances become clients of the formal financial system in countries of origin and destination, they could save and thus, invest this money to improve national economies.

The presentation made by UN-INSTRAW consisted in giving a gender analysis of that concept and in proposing other another focus if we want to use remittances as a Local Gender Sensitive Development resource.

Description:
The first meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Developement took place on July 9th, 10th and 11th 2007 in Bruxelles, Belgium. The governemental discussions were preceeded of a representative civil society meeting on July 9th. It was the beginning of a glabal process designed in order to better the efects of migration on developement.

Date: 07.03.2007 Event:Workshop on “Building Partnerships” within the context of UNITAR’s Migration and Development series - UNITAR - NY, USA.
Description:
This seminar on Building Partnerships was catering to the ongoing policy discussions on international migration and development, which gained momentum during the General Assembly’s High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development (HLD), held at UN Headquarters in September 2006. This dialogue was continued at the first Global Forum on International Migration and Development to be held in Belgium in July 2007.

The seminar brought together development and migration experts to share their views and discuss the migration-development nexus in the context of their respective mandates and policy agendas. A look at the historical evolution of this nexus lead to a discussion on more recent developments. The Seminar presented evidence and experiences regarding the building and functioning of partnerships that bring together the development and migration ‘communities’, including local actors, the private sector, as well as migrants and diaspora organizations.

This seminar was intended to:
- increase mutual understanding between migration and development communities;
- look at how migration is taken into account in development cooperation;
- identify good practices in increasing the development impact of migration and, in this context, models of successful partnership between different stakeholders;
- discuss the way forward for enhanced international cooperation in this field;
- brief delegates on the state of preparations for the first Global Forum on International Migration and Development to be held in July in Belgium, and on the work of the Global Migration Group (GMG).

Event:Seminar-Workshop on "Family, Childhood and Migration" - UNDP, UNFPA, IOM, UNICEF - Quito, Ecuador
Description:
The UNDP, UNFPA, OIM and UNICEF summoned to a Seminar - workshop on “ Family, Childhood and Migration ” in Quito, Ecuador, with the participation of representatives of public and private institutions, ONGs, social organizations and academic institutions of the country and of the exterior, as well as to represantatives of agencies and international organizations.

The general target of the event was: Based on a compared analysis of the Ecuatorian experience and that of the taking part countries, establish lines of work for the formulation of policies in order to guarantee the rights of children, girls and adolescents affected by the migration, establish the conceptual basis for a plan of action for 2007. For it, three specific targets were proposed:
- To present to the participants, for his discussion and ratification, a proposal that shows the current situation of the migratory phenomenon in the country, as well as his principal characteristics and his effects between children, girls and adolescents.
- To know the policies that are being implemented in other countries, related with: Polities to mitigate the irregular migration, especially of children, girls and adolescents; Social Policies to face the effects in children, girls and adolescents, of the migration of parents and mothers; Policies of familiar reunification in countries of origin and destination; Policies to promote the cultural identity and integration of children, girls and adolescents in the countries of origin and destination. And,
- To agree a prioritized agenda of work (strategic lines of intervention) for the definition of Institutional Policies and immediate actions, directed to guarantee the exercise of the rights of children, girls and adolescents and his families facing the migratory phenomenon.

Description:
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the International Organization for the Migrations (IOM) organized this seminar in Bogota, Colombia, with the participation of experts and national and international experts as panelists and a very select group of guests: governmental officials, representatives of the private sector, the academy, the international cooperation and organizations of the civil society, between others. Two panels were realized, the first one is a look to the international migration from the gender perspective and the second one, focused on the women inside the migratory process with the presentation of Latin-American experiences. It finished with the Throwing of the Memoirs of the Second Seminar on International Migration and Shape of Transnational Communities.

The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations organized the Fifth Coordination Meeting on International Migration in response to General Assembly Resolution 58/208 of 13 February 2004 on International Migration and Development, which requested the Secretary-General to continue convening meetings to coordinate activities regarding international migration The Meeting had two main objectives: (a) to discuss the implications of the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development, which was conducted by the General Assembly on 14 and 15 September 2006; and (b) to exchange information on activities in the area of international migration and development of participating organizations.

Description:
In New York, UN-INSTRAW was invited to participate in Round Table No. 3 on “Multidimensional aspects of international migration and development, including remittances”. The High-Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development took place on 14 and 15 September 2006 in New York at UN Headquarters. In its resolution 58/208 of 23 December 2003, the General Assembly decided to devote a high-level dialogue to international migration and development during its sixty-first session in 2006. The purpose of the high-level dialogue was to discuss the multidimensional aspects of international migration and development in order to identify appropriate ways and means to maximize its development benefits and minimize its negative impacts. Additionally, the high-level dialogue had a strong focus on policy issues, including the challenge of achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Description:
The Regional Consultation on Migration, Remittances and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean brought together 75 representatives from 13 countries, namely Brazil, Bolivia, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua and Peru, to prepare the The High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development (14-15.09.2006).

The regional consultation was convened by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and was jointly organized with the Government of the Dominican Republic, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE) and the Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, in keeping with the aims of the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (UN-INSTRAW) and the United Nations Public-Private Alliance for Rural Development. FUNGLODE hosted the meeting at its headquarters in Santo Domingo.

Participants at the consultation represented the main stakeholder groups - governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private sector, and international organizations and foundations. Among the NGOs, discussants came from home town associations and other diaspora organizations, as well as from community organizations in countries of origin .

The Ibero-American Secretariat (SEGIB) organized the Ibero-American Meeting on Migration with support from ECLAC, through its Population Division (CELADE), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Description:
The 2005 World Summit put the goals of full employment and decent work firmly back into the United Nations development agenda. It demonstrated that there is a solid consensus that in order to achieve the internationally agreed development goals, including the MDGs, employment and decent work need to be at the centre of economic and social policies. World Leaders also concluded at the Summit that in many parts of the world the goals could not be achieved by the 2015 deadline under the prevailing employment and labour market condition. Against this backdrop ECOSOC decided to devote its 2006 High-Level Segment to employment.

INSTRAW participated in the ECOSOC roundtable ministerial breakfast on the “Gender Dimensions of Labour Migration” of the 5th of July and in the Panel discussion on International Migration and Development.

Description:
The Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, in collaboration with Fondazione Rosselli and with the support of the Italian Government, organized an International Symposium on International Migration and Development in Turin, Italy, from 28 to 30 June 2006. The Symposium falled within the framework of the preparatory work of United Nations Secretariat for the High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development that the General Assembly conducted from 14 to 15 September.

The purpose of the Symposium was to debate, at the substantive level, key issues that Governments, international organizations and civil society face in addressing the challenges and opportunities posed by international migration. The Symposium focussed on relevant policy questions about ways of enhancing the contribution of international migration to development. The event allowed for an exchange of views between experts and representatives of governments, the United Nations, international organizations and civil society. In discussing both the technical and policy dimensions of migration issues, the Symposium built the capacity of decision-makers, particularly from developing countries and countries with economies in transition, for preparing for the High-level Dialogue at the national level.

Description:
The 50th session of the Commission on the Status of Women considered the following two themes:
* Enhanced participation of women in development: an enabling environment for achieving gender equality and the advancement of women, taking into account, inter alia, the fields of education, health and work.
* Equal participation of women and men in decision-making processes at all levels.

The Director represented the Institute with a presentation on INSTRAW’s work in gender and remittances.The short documentary prepared by INSTRAW featuring results from the Dominican Republic case study was also shown to participants of the High-level panel.

In collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), INSTRAW organized this panel during the 50th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). Event:24th International Conference for women leaders on "Migration and Gender Issues within the Millennium Development Goals" - United Nations - Haifa, Israel
Description:
This conference celebrated in Haifa, Israel, took as targets to understand better the tendencies in the feminization of migration and to analyze how there are related questions of migration and gender, and the Millennium Development Goals.

The conference was expected to produce a compilation of information and best practices on different aspects of the remittance industry. It brought together stakeholders and experts in several aspects of remittances, with the goals of promoting dialogue, exchanging perspectives, and sharing key learning experiences on an inter-regional basis.The objectives were:
- To provide an overview on best practices and experiences in remittances from various global, regional, and national perspectives
- To generate ideas to enable overseas workers to remit funds with greater ease and reliability
- To promote the use of remittance funds for poverty reduction and development initiatives
