United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement for 25 November 2007, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, condemning violence against women and announcing a system-wide multi-year campaign through 2015. The campaign will focus on three key areas: global advocacy; United Nations leadership by example; and strengthened partnerships at the national and regional levels to support the work of Governments, civil society, the private sector and others.
Within this framework, UN-INSTRAW’s Director, Carmen Moreno, emphasized the need for joint efforts to eliminate gender-based violence and called for increased collaboration among UN entities. UN-INSTRAW’s research programme on Gender, Peace and Security aims to promote gender equality and women’s full and equal participation in peacekeeping, peace processes, post-conflict situations and in security sector reform.
On the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence, the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman launched an Internet campaign entitled “NO to Violence against Women”, which aims to raise awareness on the consequences of violence against women. Moreover, UNIFEM published a report on violence against women entitled “NO MORE!!!! The right of Women to live a Life Free from Violence in Latin America and the Caribbean,” calling “…on governments, international organizations, civil society and the media to promote the eradication of violence against women and an end to impunity for those who commit such crimes”.
