The Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and UN-INSTRAW have agreed on a project for carrying out new research to produce reform tools and documents which will be developed into a ‘Gender and Security Sector Reform (SSR) Toolkit’.
As part of the process for the preparation of the toolkit, UN-INSTRAW personnel attended a Gender and Security Sector Reform Expert Workshop on 15-17 August 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland. The workshop dealt with issues such as: police, defence, justice reform and gender; parliamentary and civil society oversight of the security sector and gender; privatization of security and gender; gender training for security personnel; the integration of gender into SSR assessment, monitoring and evaluation, national security policy and gender; penal reform and gender; border management and gender, and operationalising the gender and SSR toolkit.
