During a three-day meeting from September 3-6 in Accra, Ghana, the UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) and the European Commission (EC) emphasized the need for donors and governments to address the issue of gender inequality in order to achieve goals of poverty reduction.
The meeting gathered together more than 1000 representatives from governments and aid agencies. It focused on evaluating the progress made since the singing of the Paris Declaration of Aid Effectiveness, an international declaration on aid reform. During the meeting, EC/UN Partnership on Gender Equality for Development and Peace Program and UNIFEM pressed donors and governments to include gender proponents in all areas of development, such as planning, budgeting and monitoring. They stressed that the inclusion of gender in national development renders aid more effective.
UNIFEM states that 1 billion women in the world are living in poverty. This highlights the importance of gender equality in development, as progress cannot be made in combating poverty without the participation and inclusion of women.
