The United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC), South Asia, and the Gender Training Institute (GTI) of the Centre for Social Research (CSR), New Delhi have released a training manual for police officers dealing with cases of human trafficking in India.

In India, it estimated that 60% of trafficking victims are minors.  Most training that police officers have received only deal with the legal and procedural aspects of human trafficking.  The manual addresses the challenges of policing such cases, and emphasizes the sensitive and humane side of trafficking. For instance, the manual describes how rescued persons should be called ‘survivors’ rather than ‘victims’ because it emphasis the trauma that they have overcome.

Facilitators are to discuss issues of gender sensitivity with police officers in training, so that they understand the connection between gender issues and human trafficking. Points of discussion in the manual include patriarchal value systems, religious sanction and social practices and the division of labor between men and women. In addition, the manual will be translated into various regional dialects in India to better train police officers.
