Gender Links, Gender and Media Southern Africa Network, and the Media Institute of Southern Africa hosted an international summit from August 11th-12th in Johannesburg, South Africa, entitled “Whose News, Whose Views? Critical Citizens, Responsive Media."
The conference brought together 200 activists, journalists, practitioners, and analysts from the South African Region. Topics discussed during the summit included media literacy, glass ceilings in the newsroom, gender and images, and xenophobia. The summit was held parallel to a conference put together by the Southern African Gender Protocol Alliance, which was attended by SADC heads of states. “Whose News, Whose Views? Critical Citizens, Responsive Media" brought attention to issues relating to the marginalization of women in South African media.
This Gender and Media Summit is an important step forward in addressing gender equality in the South African region.
