In October 2004, the United Nations General Assembly passed a historic Resolution on the elimination of crimes against women and girls committed in the name of honour.
The Resolution stresses the need to treat all forms of violence against women and girls, including those committed in the name of honour, as a criminal offence, punishable by law.
It also calls upon all states to intensify efforts to prevent and eliminate crimes against women and girls through legislative, administrative and programmatic measures. Crimes against women and girls are incompatible with all cultural values. The Resolution is now available in English, Bengali, French, Russian, Turkish, Bosnian, Indonesian, Sorani, Turkmen, Chinese, Kurmanci, Spanish, Arabic, Dari, Malay, Urdu, Bahasa, Farsi and Punjabi.
