Migrants Count - Five Steps Toward Better Migration Data Print
Improving Migration Data - Migrants Count
Briefing on the report of the Commission on International Migration Data for Development Research and Policy

23 February 2010
United Nations Headquarters, New York
Conference Room D

Despite the well-evidenced breadth and impact of human mobility, many countries do not collect, publish
or standardize detailed data on migrants or do so only in a very limited way. Recognizing these shortcomings, in 2008 the Center for Global Development, with the financial support of MacArthur
Foundation, convened a group of international experts from academia, UN agencies and other
international organizations, asking them to specify practical and politically feasible actions to expand the
quantity and quality of migration data. The result is the internationally received report of the Commission on International Migration Data for Development Policy and Research entitled “Migrants Count – Five Steps for Better Migration Data “.

This briefing, set in the context of the 41st Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (23-26
February 2010) will discuss the report’s five recommendations on how countries, international organizations, and the research community can significantly improve international migration data in the
short run. The briefing will take place on 23 February from 1:45 -2:45 pm in Conference Room D.

Panellists:
Mr. Michael Clemens, Project Director “Migrants Count” and Research Fellow, Center for Global Development

Mr. Bela Hovy, Chief, Migration Section, Population Division, UN Department of Economic and Social
Affairs

Ms. Jil Matheson, UK National Statistician

Participants: The event is open to members of the Permanent Missions and participants of the 41st
