Unemployment rising fastest amongst migrants |

[3 May 2009 by Sarah McInerney in Times Online] Immigrants from European Union accession states are the fastest rising category among the unemployed in Ireland. Last year the number of migrants from new member states in Europe signing on to the Live Register rose by 300%. A report from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) shows that the economic crisis has resulted in sharply increased levels of unemployment among foreign workers and that the majority are choosing not to return to their home countries when they become unemployed.

[29 April, 2009 by Elizabeth Eames Roebling in IPS] Elias Pina sits in a fertile high mountain valley on the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Twice weekly, the side streets fill with Haitians and Dominicans trading produce, used clothing, kitchen equipment and shoes.
The merchants, predominantly women, pay a fee to the town for a place to sit and spread their merchandise. There is an occasional man selling low-end electronics, sunglasses, and pirated DVDs. Most of the men have tables while the women sit on the ground.

The UNESCO book «Migration without borders. Essays on the free movement of people» has received great interest amongst researchers and politicians since its publication in English in 2007. It is now available to a wider audience, having been translated into French and Spanish, as well as Russian.
