| Undocumented and seriously ill: residence permits for medical reasons in Europe |

[26 January 2010, PICUM] Under international and European human rights law, EU member states are obliged to ensure that removal of seriously ill migrants to their countries of origin does not amount to a violation of their human rights. However, in recent years, the forced return of severely ill undocumented migrants to their countries of origin, where they were unable to access care has raised concern among many medical professionals and NGOs, both in Europe and beyond. PICUM decided to investigate the regulations and procedures in several EU member states concerning the granting of residence permits to undocumented migrants for medical reasons.
