The Global Forum for Migration and Development, taking place in Athens, Greece, this week, is focused on the integration of migration policies into development to find strategies that benefit all. UN-INSTRAW will participate in the Civil Society Days of the 3rd Global Forum on Migration and Development on 2-3 November, to present the Institute’s Gender and Migration Virtual Community.

Theodora Tzakri, Deputy Minister of Interior of Greece and Chair-in-Office of the 3rd GFMD said at a press conference that the Global Forum for Migration and Development (GFMD) is a principal global platform to discuss migration and development related issues regarding policy-making and the exchanging of best practices.

“The Global Forum on Migration and Development, only in its third year, has already influenced the political discourse regarding migration and development in many countries. At the same time, it has created links and channels of communication bringing together governments across the globe,” she stated.

The Civil Society Days of the GFMD the first time that we will deal directly with the vital issues of migration and development.
 
Greece, host of the Global Forum, is a nation greatly influenced by migration. One generation ago, it was a country of emigration, sending millions of its sons and daughters to every corner of the world in pursuit of a better life. The migrants have played a fundamental role in Greece’s development, contributing to the country’s economic, social, and cultural growth. An estimated five million Greeks live in different parts of the world. However, over the past generation, in additional to being a transit country, Greece has been transformed into a country of immigration. As of today, approximately ten percent of the Greek population is made up of immigrants, primarily from neighbor countries, but also from Africa, the Middle East, and beyond.
 
Migration, and its potential to contribute to development, is one of the most critical issues our world faces today. During the event, the complexity of these issues will be discussed and the vital role of the civil society explored.
