CAWTAR
CAWTAR was established in 1993 by the Arab Gulf Programme for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Tunisian Government.
The establishment of the Center coincided with the preparation of the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1994. It was, however, a direct response to a long-felt need in the Arab region for a specialized center to promote the participation of Arab women in the development process.
CAWTAR’s main objectives are:
- To contribute to developing and reinforcing a new vision of the Arab woman, as well as changing the traditional view of gender roles in the process of social development;
- To contribute to raising awareness among policy-makers, planners, interest groups, institutions and the general public about the current situation of Arab women and their real and potential contributions to national development;
- To contribute to enhancing capacity building of governments’ institutions and NGOs to monitor and analyze women’s changing roles, design appropriate policies, programs and projects that will facilitate women’s participation in the development process;
To coordinate efforts among governments, non-governmental national, regional and/or international organizations operating in the field of women’s development in order to achieve common goals. |
