Executive Board commended UN-INSTRAW on progress achieved
The Executive Board of UN-INSTRAW, meeting in its Resumed Sixth session on 1 October 2009 in New York, commended the Institute on the progress made and new initiatives taken. The Board also approved the proposed UN-INSTRAW 2010 budget.

Experts will analyse the issue of gender in electoral systems
Representatives from the UN-INSTRAW programme “Gender, governance and women’s political participation,” will participate in the “III International Congress, which will focus on the topic of Electoral Studies:  Parties, elections and quality of democracy in globalization.” The representative will present a new UN-INSTRAW initiative within the thematic scope of electoral systems and gender.

UN-INSTRAW participated in the event entitled “First international seminar – Migration in the dawn of the XXI Century” which was held from 13 to 15 October at the Economic Research Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico.

Actions for women and media in Morocco
The Ministry of Social Development, Family and Solidarity together with other government authorities, media representatives and the EU, has signed a national charter for improving the image of women in the media.

Women’s organization urges Morocco to lift reservations to CEDAW
Association of Democratic Women of Morocco (ADFM) criticized what they call an “ambiguous position” of Morocco towards the removing of their reservations to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

UN Security Council adopts resolutions on women and conflict
On 30 September and 5 October, Security Council adopted resolutions 1888 and 1889 which outline actions that the United Nations and Member States can take to prevent conflict-related sexual violence and urge key stakeholders to ensure that women’s protection and empowerment is taken into account during post-conflict needs assessments and planning.

In Iraq, displaced female-headed households among the most vulnerable
Most of Iraq's more than 1.5 million internally displaced people are caught in a vicious cycle of despair and female-headed households suffer most from lack of health care, basic services and the threat of eviction, according to the International Organization for Migration, IOM.

UN peacekeeping personnel took part in conference on women police officers
In late September, more than 20 female police officers serving in UN peacekeeping operations around the world took part in a training conference. The initiative is one of many efforts to recruit more females to serve in United Nations peacekeeping missions.

The UN Security Council voiced deep concern about the under-representation of women in all stages of peace processes and urged all countries and international bodies to take further steps toward the full participation of women in all stages of conflict resolution and peace-building.

Amnesty urges Canadian government to increase efforts to solve crimes against indigenous women
Over the last four decades, 520 indigenous women have disappeared or been killed in Canada. Amnesty International calls the federal government's efforts to stop violence against native women "a shocking failure.”

Guinean soldiers use systematic sexual abuse as war tactic
There are no exact figures of the women raped and sexually assaulted when Guinean soldiers suppressed political demonstrations against the military junta at a stadium on September 28, but testimonies, confirmed by snapshots from cell phones being circulated in the country, give a picture of a systematic and massive abuse.
