iKNOW Politics
International Knowledge Network of Women in Politics

UN-INSTRAW is an Affiliate Organization of iKNOW Politics, which is designed to increase the number and effectiveness of women in political life by utilizing a technology enabled forum to provide access to resources, expertise, dialogue, and knowledge creation on women’s political participation. iKNOW Politics brings together women involved in politics around the world in order to give them access to valuable resources and advisory services, share interests and experiences, participate in training and development, and network and collaborate on issues of interest. Members have access to experts and practitioners who can advise candidates and elected officials on how to develop and implement successful campaign and advocacy strategies with the goal of getting more women engaged in politics. The network also facilitates direct contact between women leaders to share relevant experiences, challenges and successes with one another.

UN-INSTRAW has partnered with the UP Centre for Women’s Studies in the implementation of the “Gender and Remittances: Building Gender-Responsive Local Development” project (2007-2008), which will analyze women’s migration and the local development impacts of remittances in Albania, Dominican Republic, Lesotho, Morocco, Philippines and Senegal from a gender perspective. CWS will work specifically on the Philippines component of this multi-country project.

UN-INSTRAW has partnered with the UAM Fundación General in the implementation of the “Gender and Remittances: Building Gender-Responsive Local Development” project (2007-2008), which will analyze women’s migration and the local development impacts of remittances in Albania, Dominican Republic, Lesotho, Morocco, Philippines and Senegal from a gender perspective. Fundación General will work specifically on the Morocco component of this multi-country project.

UN-INSTRAW has partnered with the Sussex Centre for Migration Research in the implementation of the “Gender and Remittances: Building Gender-Responsive Local Development” project (2007-2008), which will analyze women’s migration and the local development impacts of remittances in Albania, Dominican Republic, Lesotho, Morocco, Philippines and Senegal from a gender perspective. UN-INSTRAW has partnered with the SAMP in the implementation of the “Gender and Remittances: Building Gender-Responsive Local Development” project (2007-2008), which will analyze women’s migration and the local development impacts of remittances in Albania, Dominican Republic, Lesotho, Morocco, Philippines and Senegal from a gender perspective. The SAMP will work specifically on the Lesotho component of this multi-country project.

Centre for Arab Women Training and Research (CAWTAR)

UN-INSTRAW is working with CAWTAR to implement a project on “Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Politics and Decision-Making in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia,” which aims to foster policy dialogue and debate on women’s participation in politics and decision-making; raise awareness of women’s actual and potential political roles through the media; and (iii) create stronger and more effective advocacy for women’s participation in politics and decision-making.

UN-INSTRAW has partnered with FWC for the implementation of the “Gender Dimensions of Remittances: Their flows, uses and development impacts in the Philippines” project (2007-2008), which seeks to analyze women’s migration and remittances between Italy and the Philippines from a gender perspective. 



Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces (DCAF)
UN-INSTRAW, in collaboration with DCAF and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) is developing a toolkit on Gender and Security Sector Reform, which aims to facilitate gender mainstreaming in specific security sectors (police, defense, national parliaments, civil society, border guards, etc.) by providing concrete examples and practical recommendations to SSR practitioners.

UN-INSTRAW collaborates with IDEA on supporting and strengthening the participation of women in democratic institutions and processes throughout the world. In particular, UN-INSTRAW and IDEA are committed to compiling and making available comparative information and research on the obstacles to women's political participation and how to advance gender and democracy issues and promote the participation and representation of women in political life.

UN-INSTRAW is currently collaborating with the IOM on a case study of the gender dimensions of women’s migration and remittances between Spain and Colombia.

United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)

UN-INSTRAW collaborates with the ECLAC Division for Gender Affairs on a number of projects, most recently the Gender Equality Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean, which aims to make strategic gender inequality indicators and analytical tools for policy-making available to governments and to maintain up-to-date oversight of women’s physical, economic and political decision-making capacity as it pertains to gender equality.

UN-INSTRAW relies on the support of many of the UN's Online Volunteers, who collaborate with such tasks as translation of documents, design of logos or other graphic elements, development of contact networks for virtual dialogues and other activities, etc.

United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW)

As with the other entities of the United Nations’ gender equality architecture, UN-INSTRAW collaborates with DAW on various initiatives, including the gathering of information on Financing for Gender Equality and the creation of a network on women, political participation and decision-making in Africa.


International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)

UN-INSTRAW has partnered with IFAD for the implementation of the “Gender Dimensions of Remittances: Their flows, uses and development impacts in the Philippines” project (2007-2008), which seeks to analyze women’s migration and remittances between Italy and the Philippines from a gender perspective. The project is being implemented with funding from IFAD and in collaboration with the Filipino Women’s Council.



Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI)

As with the other entities of the United Nations’ gender equality architecture, UN-INSTRAW collaborates with OSAGI on various initiatives, including the UN Interagency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANWGE) and the UN Interagency Taskforce on Women, Peace and Security.


United Nations Department for Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO)

UN-INSTRAW has collaborated with DPKO on several projects, including: i) with the Logistics Support Division (LSD), a study on promoting female recruitment and retention, which identified a number of concrete entry points for increasing female recruitment, and resulted in the appointment of a Gender Outreach Officer; ii) with the Integrated Training Service (ITS) and the Best Practices Section, a workshop on Gender Mainstreaming in Peace Support Operations at UN-INSTRAW’s headquarters in Santo Domingo (June 2007); and iii) with the Best Practices Section, the creation of a Mapping of Gender Training for Peacekeepers [link], which provides a global overview of pre-deployment and in-mission gender training.


United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)

As with the other entities of the United Nations’ gender equality architecture, UN-INSTRAW collaborates with UNIFEM on various initiatives, including bringing a gender perspective to security sector reform initiatives, particularly in the context of Haiti, and women’s political participation at the local level in Latin America (Central America, the Andean Region and Mexico). In 2005, UN-INSTRAW signed a Letter of Agreement with UNIFEM that seeks to strengthen collaboration on gender equality and the empowerment of women between the two organizations.


United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

UN-INSTRAW has partnered with UNDP on several projects; including:
i) with the Gender Unit Team and the Capacity Development Group , a project on “Gender and Remittances: Building Gender-Responsive Local Development” (2007-2008), which will analyze women’s migration and the local development impacts of remittances in Albania, Dominican Republic, Lesotho, Morocco, Philippines and Senegal from a gender perspective;
ii) with the Latin American Sub-Regional Resource Facility (LAC-SURF), the production of a tool “Security for All: Violence against women and the security sector,” which aims to assess and improve the security sector response to violence against women in Latin America;
iii) with the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, a series of workshops and other capacity-building tools on mainstreaming gender in CPR.



United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

UN-INSTRAW has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UNESCO that seeks to strengthen collaboration on gender equality and the empowerment of women between the two organizations.


United Nations Foundation (UNF)

In 2007, UN-INSTRAW signed a ground-breaking agreement with UNF and the United Nations Fund for International Partnerships (UNFIP), which established a Fund for UN-INSTRAW in order to generate more private-sector funding for gender equality and the empowerment of women.

United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR)

In addition to the other UN Research and Training Institutes, UN-INSTRAW maintains a close working relationship with UNITAR, which in 2007 included co-organizing “Gender Equality and Government: The Americas Forum”, in which UN-INSTRAW’s Director gave a keynote address, and the Institute presented its work on quota systems for women’s political participation; and participating in a Webinar on ICT Policy and the Girl Child.




United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)

UN-INSTRAW is collaborating with UNPFII on the implementation of the “Participation of Indigenous Women in Information and Communication Technologies” project (2007-2010), which includes the preparation of a mapping of indigenous women’s and ICT organization in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, and the development of a toolkit on communications for indigenous women’s groups. In April 2007, UN-INSTRAW presented a paper to the Permanent Forum on the political participation of indigenous women in Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Peru.


MINUSTAH
United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH)

UN-INSTRAW currently serves as the disaster recovery site and evacuation command centre for MINUSTAH, providing logistical support and access to facilities for UN peacekeepers in Haiti. In addition, the Gender Unit of MINUSTAH is cooperating with the Institute in a gender assessment of the Haitian security sector, financed by the Government of Norway.


United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

UN-INSTRAW has developed a close working relationship with UNFPA, which has financed three case studies on the gender dimensions of migration and remittances in Dominican Republic (2005), Guatemala (2007) and Southern Africa (2007 – women’s migration from Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe to South Africa).
