The Other Half of Gender: Men's Issues in Development brings the gender
and development debate full circle-from a much-needed focus on
empowering women to a more comprehensive gender framework that considers
gender as a set of socially constructed expectations for women and men's
behavior. The book acknowledges the slowly emerging realization that
attaining gender equality will be difficult, if not impossible, without
first changing the ways in which masculinity is defined and acted upon.
Please join us for a discussion with the book's editors, Ian Bannon and
Maria C. Correia, both of the World Bank. They will reflect on the
issues of gender and development, and also reflect on gender's
relationship to conflict concerns, including rising male unemployment,
the declining proportion of men in higher education, and boys'
underperformance in primary and secondary schools. Gary Barker and Mary
Amuyunzu-Nyamongo, contributors to the book, will discuss their research
on gender within the frameworks of health, development, and violence
prevention. Michal Avni will discuss programmatic implications for USAID
and other field-based organizations.
