Who We Are
WOMEN’S LAND LINK AFRICA (WLLA) is a collaboration
of existing initiatives that supports and strengthens women at various
levels with particular focus on communities to have access to and control
over land and housing using a community development and rights-based
approach. WLLA was created by four dedicated partners including COHRE, the
Huairou Commission, FAO, and UN Habitat, to address the growing need to link
women and share information on the issues of housing and land rights for
women throughout Africa. This was initiated in order to strengthen the many
ongoing efforts already in place, to slowly build towards an Africa where
women’s housing and land rights are respected, protected and fulfilled.
The WLLA plays an important role in strengthening
the already existing efforts on advocacy for law/policy reform and
implementation; information gathering, dissemination and exchanges on best
practices and lessons learned; the development of tools and strategies
towards achievement of women’s equal rights to land, housing and property.
It seeks to link grassroots women with NGOs, community based groups,
academics, donors, governmental offices, and with all those interested in
fighting for women’s housing and land rights as well as those interested in
supporting grassroots women’s local development initiatives.
Using the tools of human rights on one hand, and
community driven initiatives on the other, the WLLA contributes to the
improvement of women’s housing and land rights in Africa by gathering and
disseminating information, supporting and linking successful strategies, and
advocating for change.
